Managing university assignments and exams can be stressful, and if you are providing support or worrying about a friend or family member, this may be an even more challenging time. We asked students to share some of their top tips for managing during these times:

  1. Take regular breaks every 20-40 minutes; even if this is just standing up and stretching, try not to sit in the same position for too long. It’s good to have a proper 15-minute break every hour, maybe use this time to practice some breathing exercises or some short exercises (see our breathing video & list of apps to help manage working and breaks).
  2. Do something for you – whilst we often feel guilty for not revising and working at all times when we have exams and assignments due, it can actually be more productive to set some time aside each week to do one of your favourite things and switch off from your work and other responsibilities.
  3. Make a weekly and/or exam timetable if you have assignments/deadlines. This will help you prioritise tasks and help prevent you feeling overwhelmed.
  4. Maintain a healthy and balanced diet – food and good nutrition is super important when working and needing to concentrate. Maintaining a regular and balanced diet during these times is really important for fuelling your brain power!
  5. Change up your work location and try to avoid working in your bedroom – this can be really helpful for maintaining concentration, but also helping with good sleep hygiene.
  6. Book in some group revision sessions with friends – maybe arrange a fun activity afterwards to help break up your work and give yourself a change to interact with others.
  7. Reach out for help. If things feel like they are becoming unmanageable, reach out. You may want to speak to University staff, personal tutors, lecturers or the counselling service. It’s ok not to be ok, and it is your universities job to take care of you and support you when you need that extra hand!
